Vera

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, Vera Caslavska endorsed her Olympic titles in gymnastics but also protested with dignity before the Soviet regime that occupied her native Czech Republic (then Czechoslovakia). Today, September 15, prior to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of that sporting and social feat, I want to release this song as a humble tribute to a woman whose sports excellence and bravery in the face of injustice won the hearts of Mexicans and she created a deep bond with Mexico. Nothing better than the mariachi to celebrate your life, wherever you are, Vera.

A reminder of Věra Čáslavská’s legacy linking Prague and Mexico City

A spectacle of festivities is underway in Mexico City commemorating the 50thanniversary of the Summer Olympics of 1968: a year that left its mark on Czech as well as world history. The most successful female athlete of the Olympics, and of the year 1968, was Czechoslovak gymnast Věra Čáslavská. Her popularity went beyond the world of sports. That same year, she was the second most popular woman on the planet, after former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
